The European Commission has recommended all EU member states discourage non-essential travel between the UK and the 27-country bloc, in order to stem the spread of a new CCP virus variant detected in Britain. The commission, the European Union’s executive body, adopted the recommendation on Tuesday, after countries across Europe and beyond suspended travel from Britain over concerns about the mutant virus, which British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said was 70 percent more transmissible than the old strain. “Given the current uncertainties and in light of the precautionary principle, member states should take coordinated action to discourage non-essential travel between the UK and the EU,” said Didier Reynders, the commissioner for justice.
