Commentary Smartphones, iPads, texting, streaming, high-definition TV, e-books. All of these were virtually unheard of not so long ago, but now they are commonplace. It shows just how quickly technology changes and the extent to which it dominates our children’s lives. Technology has had a huge impact on public education. Many school districts spend huge amounts of money purchasing the latest electronic gadgets for their students. No doubt the leaders of these districts really believe these gadgets are an integral part of providing their students with a 21st-century education. However, increasingly more teachers are becoming concerned that technology is receiving too much emphasis. While it makes sense to ensure that students and teachers have reasonable access to computers, technology should never be the driving force behind education reform.
