Sri Lanka’s Cabinet ministers resigned en masse as protests over the government’s handling of the country’s worst economic crisis in decades escalated, the education minister said on Sunday. The country’s stock exchange fell 5.9 percent as a result of the Cabinet’s resignation, prompting authorities to halt trade on Monday, AFP reported. Education minister Dinesh Gunawardena said that all Cabinet ministers handed in their resignation letters to the prime minister during a late-night meeting on Sunday, India-based news agency Madhyamam reported. Namal Rajapaksa, the prime minister’s eldest son, has also resigned from his role as sports minister.
