A federal judge has ordered the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to hand over records to Steve Bannon, a former adviser to former President Donald Trump. Bannon was charged with contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with a select House of Representatives committee that’s investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol. U.S. District Court Judge Carl Nichols, a Trump appointee, questioned why prosecutors are pursuing the charge against Bannon when the DOJ’s Office of Legal Counsel has previously found that current and former executive branch officials were immune from congressional subpoenas.
