SALT LAKE CITY—Music is what makes dance come to life. Shen Yun Performing Art has seven companies and each has a live orchestra. Jason Winslow, a pharmacist, shared his appreciation for Shen Yun’s musicians. “The music is beautiful. I can pick out the instruments and listen to the artists perform. I can hear the clarinet—very beautiful and the trumpet and the bass and those two instruments in the middle. I don’t know what they are but the traditional Chinese instruments when they play, I can watch them. And it’s very beautiful and fun to watch,” said Mr. Winslow. The instruments that Mr. Winslow was referring to are the pipa and erhu. The erhu is a two-stringed instrument played with a bow and the pipa’s four strings are plucked.
