Commentary The 2022 Winter Paralympic Games are currently underway. This multi-sport event, currently taking place in Beijing, is scheduled to last from March 4 to March 13. A whole host of athletes with a range of physical and mental impairments are competing, including paraplegics, quadriplegics, and amputees. In short, the Games cater to people with a range of disabilities. It’s odd, then, that China should host such an event. After all, this is a country where people with disabilities are treated abysmally. China is home to at least 85 million disabled people. That’s more than the population of California, Texas, and Illinois combined. The types of disabilities include visual and auditory impairments, as well as mental and speech impairments.
