More than one million people have fled Ukraine since Russia invaded the country last week, according to U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi. “In just seven days we have witnessed the exodus of one million refugees from Ukraine to neighboring countries,” Grandi wrote on Twitter on March 2. “For many millions more, inside Ukraine, it’s time for guns to fall silent, so that life-saving humanitarian assistance can be provided.” Refugees have been fleeing west from the warzones in Ukraine at a rate of more than 100,000 per day since Russia began its invasion. Roughly half have ended up in Poland. Most of the rest have crossed into Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova. The Polish government is offering Ukrainian asylum-seekers free travel on some intercity metro trains, transfer services, basic medical care, and shelter.
