Commentary India is no fan of China, and for good reason. In recent years, China has stolen thousands of acres of Indian land. China has also stolen the data of millions of its citizens. There’s little love between the two countries. In fact, there’s none at all. On Feb. 14, the international day of love, India’s Ministry of Home Affairs recommended a ban on 54 Chinese mobile applications. One of the apps included in the recommendation was Shein, a leading online fashion retailer. With over 7 million monthly active users, Shein is now the world’s largest online-only fashion company. Rather worryingly, 40 percent of the company’s customers are based in the United States. Why is India’s Ministry of Home Affairs looking to ban Shein, and why should the U.S. government take note?
