Chief prosecutors in Austin, San Francisco, and Chicago, doubled down on criminal prosecutions of law enforcement officials in the past year-and-a-half since the George Floyd protests. All three were elected on a progressive platform to ease up on criminal punishment, especially on low-level crimes, while getting tougher on police to root out what they called bad apples. Just one year into his term, Travis County (Austin, Texas) District Attorney Jose Garza secured 29 criminal indictments against law enforcement officials, according to records.
