Northern Territory (NT) Country Liberal Party (CLP) Leader Lia Finocchiaro has stated that her party will not raise the age of criminal responsibility if they are elected to Government in 2024. In a social media post on Sunday, Finocchiaro said that the CLP is committed to putting the rights of victims before those of offenders. This comes after Chief Minister Michael Gunner recently confirmed to the ABC that the Territory Government is intent on raising the age of criminal responsibility, which currently stands at 10, and Families Minister Kate Worden told NT news that work is already in progress to make it happen. “We have supported in-principle the recommendations of the Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children in the NT, including the approach to the age of criminal responsibility,” she said.
