A bipartisan group of U.S. senators has introduced a resolution calling on China to guarantee the safety and freedom of tennis player Peng Shuai, and rebuking the failure of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to “clearly and forcefully challenge” Beijing’s narrative over her well-being. Sens. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) and Mark Warner (D-Va.) led their colleagues to introduce the resolution on Feb. 4. It states that the case of Peng is “directly related to broader international concerns” about the freedom of speech and safety of athletes competing in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
