A snowstorm hit the Greek capital Athens on Monday, snarling traffic, forcing flight cancelations, and suspending coronavirus vaccinations in the broader Athens region. The storm, given the name Elpida—”hope” in Greek—also blanketed several Greek islands in snow. Authorities warned the public to limit movements outdoors to the essential on Monday and Tuesday, while schools in many areas were shut. The snow was coming down thick and fast in central Athens, settling on the marble columns of the ancient Acropolis. Authorities sent out emergency alerts to cell phones in the wider Athens area as a warning of severe snowfall and a calling on people to avoid any unnecessary movement.
