The White House signaled that it will continue a tough-on-China approach in response to a speech by Chinese leader Xi Jinping at the World Economic Forum that called for countries to cast aside “ideological prejudice” and “reject the outdated Cold War” mentality in efforts to fight global challenges. “The comments don’t change anything,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said at a press briefing on Jan. 25. “Our approach on China remains what it has been for the last months, if not longer.” She said that the new administration seeks to tackle China’s threats with its own methods, adding that it aims to “play a better defense,” including holding China accountable for unfair practices, protecting U.S. data, and maintaining the United States’ technological edge. “What we’ve seen in the last few years is that China’s growing more authoritarian at home and more assertive abroad, and Beijing is now challenging our …
