Empire actor Jussie Smollett’s attempts to have his criminal charges—felony disorderly conduct for lying to police—dismissed have been denied. Smollett’s claim of a hate crime proved to be false: he paid the Osundairo brothers to help him stage the racist, homophobic attack in Chicago, which video evidence did not support, and receipts and checks told another story. This is an example of our society’s confirmation bias and rush to judgment.
