SANTA ANA, Calif.—Orange County’s coronavirus hospitalizations declined from 223 to 214 Oct. 9, while the number of COVID patients in intensive care dropped from 47 to 44, according to state figures. The latest numbers come one day after officials reported 260 new cases of COVID-19 and 12 additional deaths. Ten of those deaths occurred in September, one in August, and the first one was reported for October, according to the Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA). Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong, deputy county health officer, said the vast majority of September’s fatalities were unvaccinated. The victims are also trending younger than previous surges, she added. In September, 45 percent of those who died were younger than 65, she said. And 97 percent were unvaccinated, she added. “I don’t want us to repeat what happened this summer because so much could have been prevented if we’d been a little more cautious,” Chinsio-Kwong said. …
