Canada’s trucking industry is grappling with a critical shortage of drivers—a long-standing problem that is being exacerbated by the pandemic, says an organization that represents trucking associations across Canada. “We had a significant truck driver shortage prior to COVID and it’s only been made worse by the crisis,” says Stephen Laskowski, President of the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA). A lack of truck drivers has recently led to widespread fuel shortages in Britain, with gas stations running dry across the United Kingdom without enough drivers to deliver. Like Canada, the shortage was sparked by the pandemic and an aging workforce, but the UK’s fuel crisis was also exacerbated by ‘Brexit’ when a flood of foreign workers in the transport industry left the country following Britain’s departure from the European Union last year.
