In 2015, when the GLA made its first appearance, it could have been described as a cute little hatchback or a neat little subcompact crossover. But as I drove the 2021 GLA, I classified it more as an SUV because it is wider, taller and longer than a traditionally styled crossover. Headroom has been increased and a larger back seat has been installed. GLA is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo inline-four engine that provides 221 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque at 1,800 rpm. The 8G-DCT 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with shift paddles passes the engine power with minimal loss, as the ECO Start/Stop cuts idling fuel consumption.
