The Taliban terrorist group on Thursday allowed a flight to take off from Kabul’s airport for the first time since U.S. troops withdrew from the country late last month. The Qatar Airways plane left Hamid Karzai International Airport on Thursday evening local time. Details about the flight, including whether it was a commercial or charter flight, were not immediately clear. “Call it what you want, a charter or a commercial flight, everyone has tickets and boarding passes,” Mutlaq al-Qahtani, Qatar’s special envoy to Afghanistan, told Qatari-funded Al Jazeera. “This is a historic day in the history of Afghanistan as Kabul airport is fully operational. We have been faced by huge challenges … but we can now say that the airport is fit for navigation,” he added on the airport tarmac.
