Hurricane Ida, a Category 4 storm with 150 mph winds—just shy of Category 5—is hammering portions of southeastern Louisiana, according to the National Hurricane Center’s latest update. The hurricane’s northern eyewall made landfall near Port Fourchon, Louisiana, at around 12:50 p.m. ET, according to the NHC. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 150 mph and a minimum central pressure of 930 millibars. At 2 p.m., the NHC said the storm made its second landfall near Galliano, Louisiana, with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph. Those winds are stronger than Hurricane Katrina, a Category 3 storm, when it made landfall in southeastern Louisiana 16 years ago. Flooding is the greatest danger posed by Ida, as 12 to 16 feet of storm surge is expected near the mouth of the Mississippi River as well as Port Fourchon.
