The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Thursday authorized a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s and Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccines for certain vulnerable and immunocompromised people. Those who will be able to access the third dose of the vaccines include “specifically, solid organ transplant recipients or those who are diagnosed with conditions that are considered to have an equivalent level of immunocompromise,” the FDA said in a statement. The authorization is an update to the existing emergency use authorizations for the two mRNA vaccines. Several other countries, including Israel and France, have similar recommendations on booster shots. “The FDA is especially cognizant that immunocompromised people are particularly at risk for severe disease,” acting FDA commissioner Dr. Janet Woodcock said in a statement. “After a thorough review of the available data, the FDA determined that this small, vulnerable group may benefit from a third dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines.” The announcement …
