Texas state legislator Jake Ellzey on Tuesday won a U.S. House seat in a race against a candidate backed by former President Donald Trump. Ellzey, a Republican, was in the race for a vacant House seat in the Texas special congressional election runoff against Susan Wright, another Republican and the widow of the late Rep. Ron Wright, who had occupied the seat from 2019 until his death on Feb. 7. Trump in April endorsed Wright, 58, who had sought to finish her late husband’s term in the House after he was reelected in November 2020. With almost all precincts reporting in Texas’ 6th Congressional District, Ellzey received 53.3 percent of the vote, over Wright with 46.8 percent, per the Texas Secretary of State.
