IRVINE, Calif.—Riots and political unrest left the Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD) with a nearly $5 million overtime tab in 2020, The Epoch Times has learned. Data obtained through a public records request shows that overtime pay for policing the political gatherings last year was $4,929,447, a notable increase from other years due to a high amount of civil unrest. The OCSD spent $3,939 policing riots and protests in 2019, and $15,592 in 2018. “Anytime we have information that one of these events is going to have a higher number of people showing up, or possibly any threat to public safety, the Sheriff’s Department is going to plan and make sure that we have adequate staffing to allow people to practice their First Amendment rights,” OCSD Sgt.
