The Justice Department confirmed Wednesday that its employees’ email accounts had been accessed by the hackers who broke into software company SolarWinds. The department discovered the breach on Dec. 24, 2020, and has eliminated the identified method by which the hackers had accessed its Microsoft Office 365 email environment, spokesperson Marc Raimondi said in a statement. “At this point, the number of potentially accessed [Microsoft Office 365] mailboxes appears limited to around 3 percent and we have no indication that any classified systems were impacted,” Raimondi said. The department has more than 110,000 employees across multiple law enforcement agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
