The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union has launched a new campaign to bring manufacturing back onshore, by calling on the government to support their local producers. The campaign argues that the federal and state governments have been hurting Aussie manufacturers by sending jobs overseas, “time and time again,” while neglecting investment into skilled local manufacturing workers. They are calling for the post-pandemic rebuild period to be viewed as a unique opportunity to get the industry “back to where it belongs.” “The COVID-19 pandemic exposed what we’ve always known—a strong local manufacturing industry is essential for the health of our nation,” the union said in its campaign promotion. “It’s manufacturing workers who’ve kept food on our tables and made sure we had PPE during a pandemic.
