ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.—Jordan Montgomery pitched six strong innings, Aaron Judge and Gary Sánchez homered, and the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3–1 on Tuesday night. About two hours before the game started, it was announced that Yankees third base coach Phil Nevin is away from the team after a positive COVID-19 test. After the game, the team said first base coach Reggie Willits and an unnamed staff member also tested positive. Willits was replaced by minor league coordinator Mario Garza. Pitching coach Matt Blake was absent as contact tracing continues.
