Secretary of State Antony Antony Blinken says the United States is not currently discussing nuclear issues with Iran.
Iran, a top geopolitical rival to the United States behind only Russia and China, has long been seen as a high risk for the development of a nuclear weapons program.
Under President Barack Obama, the United States signed a deal with Iran, dubbed the “Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), that Mr. Obama and other supporters said would ensure that Iran’s nuclear program remained relatively undeveloped. The JCPOA’s goal was to ensure Iran was restricted to nuclear power by keeping highly enriched uranium, which could be used to manufacture high-yield nuclear weapons, out of the hands of the revolutionary Islamic state….
