New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs announced on June 8 changes to the province’s policy regarding gender rules in schools, and he said he may be willing to call an election on the issue rather than back down.
Eight Progressive Conservative dissidents, including six ministers in Higgs’ 18-member cabinet, sat out on legislative business for part of June 8 in protest to the changes. Higgs told reporters the same day that disagreement within his party “potentially could force an election.”
Blaine and Education Minister Bill Hogan have reviewed and updated three sections of the gender policy, called Policy 713.
Parental Consent
The policy previously stated that transgender or non-binary students did not require parental consent to officially change their names at school….
