Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen on May 30 signed legislation introducing the state’s first school choice program, something supporters say will help suit the needs of students.
The move means Nebraska joins 48 other U.S. states that have some form of school choice policy.
Photos released from the governor’s office show Pillen at the state’s capitol building, where he signed the legislation into law. He was accompanied by state senators, school choice advocacy representatives, and students.
The Nebraska Legislature passed the bill in a 33-11 vote last week. The new law—LB 753 (pdf), also known as the Opportunity Scholarships Act—will take effect 90 days after the legislative session ends, which is around late August or early September….
