Justice Democrats, a progressive political action committee (PAC) that helped elect the Squad—the four progressive minority Congresswomen—to the Congress in 2018, has introduced a new candidate to challenge Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) in the 2022 primary election. Rana Abdelhamid, a community organizer, non-profit founder, and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, announced that she is running for the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday. “I am honored to announce that I am running for Congress to bring a new generation of leadership to NY-12,” Abdelhamid said in a statement. New York’s 12th congressional district includes the east side of Manhattan, western Queens, and part of Brooklyn. The district’s per capita income is among the highest in the nation.
