One of the prominent armed groups in the war-torn eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has announced it is ceding a number of key territories to the East African Community regional force amid what it terms as the government’s “umpteenth violation” of a ceasefire that the M23 rebels unilaterally declared on March 7. 
Prior to announcing March 11’s retreat, a spokesperson for the rebels accused the government coalition of using the bases of the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission to launch bombs on its positions and populated areas including Mushaki, Karuba, and Malehe. 
Lawrence Kanyuka said, “The United Nations should condemn and discourage the DRC Government Coalition from using its bases, which expose UN personnel and assets to risks of collateral [damage]. …
