Justice Stephen Breyer said Tuesday that expanding the Supreme Court to decrease the power of its conservative majority could further erode public trust and weaken the court’s influence. Breyer defended the court’s independence, invoking its refusal to hear former President Donald Trump’s multiple attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. He added that the court’s authority rests on “a trust that the court is guided by legal principle, not politics,” during his lecture at Harvard Law School. “Structural alteration motivated by the perception of political influence only feed that perception, further eroding that trust,” he added.
