Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested and deported nearly one-third fewer illegal immigrants this year due to the ongoing CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus pandemic, the agency said in its latest report. From October 2019 to September 2020, ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officials conducted 103,603 arrests, a 28 percent decline from the previous fiscal year, according to the report (pdf). Ninety percent of those arrested have criminal convictions or pending criminal charges. “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in March 2020 ICE ERO temporarily adjusted its enforcement posture to narrowly focus enforcement efforts on public safety risks and individuals subject to mandatory detention based on criminal grounds,” the agency explained, adding that although ERO officers have continued to perform their duties amid the pandemic, their enforcement actions were “slowed sharply” for several months during the spring and summer.
