Tips from informants have led the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to recover over $26 million in penalties and incorrect payments under the federal government’s costliest pandemic relief program—the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS).
“Between April 2020 and last November 25 the Agency processed 1,986 leads from the public,” cabinet wrote in an Inquiry of Ministry tabled in the House of Commons by Conservative MP Adam Chambers on Dec. 8, 2022, as first reported by Blacklock’s Reporter.
“All leads provided to the Agency are reviewed for potential non-compliance and action is taken if warranted.”
The inquiry had asked for the number of complaints the CRA received concerning “recipients misusing the subsidy,” and of the complaints, how many the agency investigated and issued fines eventually….
