Labour has won the West Lancashire by-election, securing a comfortable seat against the ruling Conservatives in the third electoral test of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
On Thursday, Labour’s Ashley Dalton retained a seat in the West Lancashire by-election, securing a majority of 8,326 over Conservative hopeful Mike Prendergast, with a 10.52 percent swing from the Tories.
A swing is an indication of the scale of voter change between two political parties.
It was the first time the Tory vote dipped below 30 percent since the 1997 general election, which former Prime Minister Tony Blair’s Labour Party won by a landslide. Cold conditions on polling day and the expectation of an easy Labour hold contributed to a low turnout of less than 32 percent….
