South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem’s push for the passage of a bill to do away with a state tax on groceries has met with opposition and non-commital from fellow Republicans amid speculation that she may be contemplating a run for the White House.
Noem, a fiscally and socially conservative Republican, cruised easily to victory and a second term in November last year with 62 percent of the vote.
On Jan. 17, Noem announced, along with prime co-sponsor Rep. Mary Fitzgerald, a Republican from the city of Spearfish in the Black Hills, HB 1075, a bill to “lower the state sales tax rate and the state use tax rate on food to zero percent.”…
