MONTEREY PARK, Calif.—Nine people were killed in a mass shooting late Jan. 21 in a city east of Los Angeles following a Lunar New Year celebration that attracted thousands, police said.
The shooting occurred about 10:20 p.m. Saturday at a ballroom in the 100 block of West Garvey Avenue, according to sheriff’s Deputy M. McClendon.
It occurred about an hour after the festival in the area had ended. Tens of thousands had gathered there for the start of a two-day festival—one of the largest Lunar New Year events in Southern California—celebrating the “Year of Rabbit.”
