A proposed student housing project at the University of California–Santa Barbara (UCSB) poses health and safety threats, according to an independent review released last week, while the school is trying to address its severe housing shortage spurred by enrollment jump in recent years.
Organized and led by UCSB’s Academic Senate, the university’s governing body, the independent review reported the building needs a “robust redesign” since it is too big and needs more windows, additional ventilation in suites and kitchen areas, and more room space.
“The current design of Munger Hall incorporates a number of non-traditional and controversial elements that have triggered concern among faculty, staff, students, and the broader public,” the 202-page report stated. “Largely focused on the physical safety, psychological well-being, and comfort of the student residents.”…
