Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) said he opposes raising the stimulus check amount from $600 to $2,000 as suggested by President Donald Trump and other officials. “If we went to $2,000 per person, the additional borrowing would be up to almost $500 billion,“ Romney said, according to Utah’s KUTV. “Someone’s got to pay for that. We can’t just have free money.” Romney added that “someone’s got to pay for that,” and “we can’t just have free money.” The former Republican presidential candidate said he was also opposed to providing $600 stimulus payments. However, Romney did not appear to be opposed to other spending measures included in the massive pandemic stimulus bill, including $300 billion for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), billions of dollars for landlords, and $47 billion for transportation.
