Taiwan is mulling a nationwide ban on the Chinese-owned video app TikTok after banning it from devices used in the public sector over national security concerns, according to a government official.
Taiwan’s Minister of Digital Affairs, Audrey Tang, said on Dec. 9 that an inter-ministerial committee meeting will be held this month to discuss the possibility of extending the ban to the public, Taiwan News reported.
This came after news broke that Taiwan had barred the installation of TikTok and its Chinese version Douyin on public sector devices as they were deemed harmful to national information security.
An unnamed official from the Digital Affairs Ministry said these devices include mobile phones, tablets, and desktops. The ban also applies to the Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu, also known as Little Red Book….
