Americans have been targeted for their Asian ancestry more often in recent years but the incidents remain rare. There were 158 anti-Asian hate crimes reported in 2019 by police agencies to the FBI, up from 148 the year before. The FBI won’t release its 2020 data until the fall but in 16 of the country’s largest cities, according to an analysis by researchers from California State University (CSU) in San Bernardino (pdf), there was an increase to 122 incidents in 2020 from 49 the year before. The data has come to the forefront of media attention after a 21-year-old man killed eight people in several massage parlors in the Atlanta area on March 16. Six of the victims were Asian women.
