Many attributed Trump’s surprise victory in 2016 partly to the media’s obsession with the real estate billionaire and reality television star. His popularity continued to grow throughout the four years in office, evidenced by the tens of millions of followers on social media and the record number of votes—74 million—cast for an incumbent president. But in the aftermath of the election, Trump lost his social media megaphone and the media attention that comes with being the president of the most powerful country in the world.
