VARANASI—Last year as the bilateral relations between India and China reached their abysmal low after a bloody conflict in Galwan, the silk industry of India reiterated its call for a ban on silk imports and illegal silk dumping from China, saying this was an effort to destroy the indigenous Indian industry. China is the largest silk producer in the world while India is the second largest. The silk industry is one of the largest generators of foreign exchange for India and was also in fiscal year 2019 the provider of employment to 9.1 million Indians, according to the Indian Brand and Equity Foundation.
