The Labor government will lift the migration cap to a record 195,000, extend the relaxation of restrictions for students and increase post-study works rights to ease widespread critical skills shortages.
These changes are among the 36 outcomes from the Jobs and Skills ending on Friday at Parliament. The summit brings together industry leaders, employers, unions and the government to address Australia’s economic challenges.
Speaking at the summit, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his government will move towards permanent migration in order to reduce the “over-reliance on temporary labour,” which he said will “have a negative impact on wages.”
Albanese argued that it “makes no sense to bring people in, have them for a few years, then get a new cohort in to adapt to the Australian work environment.”…
