When Brisbane’s bid to host the 2032 Olympics was announced in July 2021, its success was due to a joint effort of the Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Sunshine Coast Councils. Their regional bid to ensure the allocation of the 35th Summer Olympic Games and 19th Paralympic Games of the modern era to Brisbane constituted an irresistible application, which secured the 3rd Olympic Games for Australia, following Melbourne in 1956, and Sydney in 2000.
Initially, the Gold Coast Mayor, Tom Tate, was disinclined to be involved, considering that the Gold Coast had already conducted the Commonwealth Games in 2018.
