Twenty-two GOP-led states have filed a court brief in supporting a court decision that struck down California’s “assault weapons” ban last month as the state appeals to the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The states, led by Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, said in a filing (pdf) dated Tuesday that the Ninth Circuit should uphold a lower court decision to strike down a ban on what California describes as illegal military-style rifles. Earlier this month, a federal judge issued an injunction and gave California 30 days to file an appeal. “The experience in Arizona and other states shows that modern rifles,” the type of rifles that California has banned, “are common to the point of ubiquity among law-abiding gun owners and their use promotes public safety,” the states’ court filing stated.
