An Iowa teen was ice fishing with his mother on East Okoboji Lake last Saturday, Feb. 4, when he witnessed a Jeep plunge perilously through the ice.
Alongside four other men, Joe Salmon, 17, an Okoboji High senior, immediately rushed to help the driver of the Jeep, whose 6-year-old dog, Cooper, was also trapped inside.
The driver, 83-year-old Thomas Lee, had been attempting to access his son-in-law’s ice fishing shack when, at about 1:19 p.m., his Jeep broke through the ice.
The water is about 4 to 5 feet deep at his point of the lake, and the Jeep was almost resting on the bottom. Meanwhile, temperatures that day were hovering around freezing….
