SAN FRANCISCO—15 human rights groups gathered outside the NBC Sports office in San Francisco on Friday, Dec. 10 to call on the station not to air the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games. In light of Human Rights Day, the groups—comprised of Tibetan, Uyghur, Southern Mongolian, Hong Kong, Taiwanese, Chinese Democracy, and other human rights campaign groups—said Beijing does not meet the moral standards for hosting the Olympics, citing the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) long track record of human rights abuses and genocide. The groups urged NBC, BBC, CBC, Sky, Discovery, and Eurosport to cancel their broadcasting deals. “We ask NBC to stop trying to pretend that sports and the Olympics are divorced from basic moral principles. Don’t broadcast these games,” Giovanni Vassallo, president of Bay Area Friends of Tibet, said at the rally.
