A U.S. Capitol Police officer and a suspect have died after a car crashed into a barrier outside the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C., said the police force’s chief on Friday. Acting Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman said a vehicle slammed into two Capitol officers at a checkpoint on Constitution Ave. A suspect then exited the car “with [a] knife in hand” and lunged at the police officers before they opened fire, wounding the suspect, she added in a news conference. Two officers were taken to a nearby hospital, where one died. The suspect also died, Pittman said. The officers and suspect were not identified. “It is with a very heavy heart that I announce one of our officers has succumbed to his injuries,” Pittman said. “This has been a very difficult time for the Capitol Police department. I ask that you keep our U.S. Capitol Police family in your prayers.” …
